THE 2019 TOKYO CYCLING INFRASTRUCTURE AWARD

This is the first bi-annual award the Cycling Embassy of Japan is proud to publish.

Over the past few weeks, our members have been getting on our bikes and going out to see the latest in what Tokyo has to offer in terms of cycling infrastructure. And, in the hope of generating some interest – and perhaps even a bit of healthy competition between Tokyo municipalities, agencies and planners, we thought we would rank and award the best of what we found.

In order to rank the lanes, we first narrowed down a long list of Tokyo streets with any sort of cycling infrastructure(most common are narrow, unprotected sharrows with pictographs) down to about 20 of the best. We then gave these bike lanes a score in the categories of design, safety, and usage from 1-10 (10 being the best). Scores were then compiled and averaged. Here are the results.
